World Youth Symphony Orchestra, Joshua Weilerstein, cond.; Zuill Bailey, cello – Interlochen Arts Festival – July 24, 2016


In their fourth performance of the 2016 season, the World Youth Symphony Orchestra welcomes not one, but two special guests: Conductor Joshua Weilerstein and cellist Zuill Bailey. Under Weilerstein’s direction, the World Youth Symphony Orchestra will accompany Bailey as he performs Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto. WYSO’s fourth concert will conclude with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.

Joshua Weilerstein is currently the artistic director of Switzerland’s Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. Weilerstein has a passion for introducing new audiences to the orchestra and establishing strong connections between performer and audience. Weilerstein’s many accolades include first prize in the Malko Competition for Young Conductors, a three-year appointment as assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic and guest appearances with several major symphony orchestras, including Baltimore, Dallas and Vancouver. Weilerstein enjoys engaging with audiences about music and encourages them to follow him on social media.

Zuill Bailey, an Interlochen alumnus (IAC 87-88), is one of the world’s premier cello soloists. Noted for his artistry, technical prowess and engaging personality, Bailey is in high demand as a soloist and has performed with symphony orchestras around the world. Bailey has premiered works by composers such as Lowell Lieberman, Philip Lasser and Roberto Sierra, produced many critically-acclaimed albums and even appeared on the HBO series Oz . Bailey is also the artistic director of El Paso Pro-Musica and Professor of Cello at the University of Texas El Paso.

Kris Bowers – Interlochen Arts Festival – July 25, 2016


Kris Bowers, with his full band, will perform selections from Heroes + Misfits, his debut recording on Concord Jazz. Released in March 2014, Heroes + Misfits opened at No. 1 on the iTunes jazz charts and to critical acclaim.

A Juilliard-trained jazz pianist, Bowers has never been afraid to step outside the genre’s traditional boundaries to create other forms of music. He performed on Watch the Throne, the 2011 collaborative album by hip-hop artists Jay-Z and Kanye West, and has scored a diverse range of documentaries and other works, including choreographer Kyle Abraham’s “Absent Matter,” written in collaboration with Otis Brown III.

This performance isn’t big—it’s large! Join country singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett and his Large Band for a night of toe-tapping, Texas-inspired fun.

Only 22 years old, Conrad Tao has already been performing professionally for 13 years. Tao is a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts, a Davison Fellow Laureate, a Gilmore Foundation Young Artist and one of Forbes Magazine’s 30 Under 30 in music.

Rick Springfield “Stripped Down” – Interlochen Arts Festival – July 27, 2016


Even ‘Stripped Down,’ Rick Springfield is still an impressive figure: Springfield made his debut as a rock singer, producing radio hits such as “Jessie’s Girl” before branching out into acting and writing.

Springfield’s filmography includes a starring role on the ’90s television series High Tide, a three-season stint on the daytime drama General Hospital, and, more recently, a supporting appearance on True Detective.

Springfield’s “Stripped Down” show offers offer an intimate glimpse into the amazing life he’s experienced through music, with personal stories introducing each song in the set, plus an audience Q&A!
